Vatican discovers first coloured images of Pius XII

For the first time in history, we’re getting to see video images of Pope Pius XII in color. The Vatican’s film library surprisingly found the images that were filmed back in 1956.

The images were taken during Pius XII’s 80th birthday, two years before his death. The Vatican decorated Cortile di San Damaso, the official entrance to the pope’s residence, with hundreds of flowers.

In these images, which were taken live, several commentators explain the celebration. The film ends after the Pope greets guests in the entrance.

The Vatican’s film library has hundreds of pictures and films on Pius XII. But many still remain unseen so chances are they’ll keep finding more surprising images just like these.
